| Description: |
In 1975, a group of Island residents tired of slow rounds and difficulty in getting tee-times, decided to put together a private golf club. After exploring various other areas on the island, the group focused on Hilton Head Plantation, which was owned by the Sea Pines developer and was in it's early stages of development.
The project was announced to the public in June 1978. Rees Jones was selected as the course architect with New Golf as the contractor.
On August 1, 1980, the Club was finally up and running. A full field participated in a two day "tin whistle" tournament over the first 12 holes. The clubhouse was finished in 1982 and as it was fully funded before construction, the Club was and still remains debt free.
The 6,570 yard course is the only private Hilton Head course designed by Rees Jones. It is considered a challenging course (Blue 72.9 rating/Slope 132) because of the tight fairways that wind through Hilton Head Plantation's many pines and lagoons. It is maintained in top condition made easier because it has about half the play of other island courses. The fairways are 419 Tifway Bermuda and the newly renovated greens have state of the art super dwarf TifEagle Bermuda, the best available for the local weather and water conditions.
