The Champaign County Forest Preserve District is a local, property tax-supported government agency charged with the stewardship of four forest preserves in Champaign County. The Forest Preserve District, which covers all but seven sections of Champaign County, was established by referendum in 1935. Due to the Depression and World War II, however, the first park was not opened until 1948.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District is to provide for the citizens and guests of Champaign County: (1) the protection and preservation of the physical and biological integrity of District holdings through the conservation of or natural and historic resources; (2) educational opportunities for increasing the knowledge and appreciation of these resources; and (3) recreational opportunities consistent with preserving the natural qualities of the Forest Preserve District resource base.
